Original fairy tale endings

We know how Hollywood, with its voracious appetite for happy endings, has portrayed popular fairy tales, but originally almost all of them ended in a very dark place. Here are the best known endings from the original source material:

In another version Ariel actually is granted a probationary soul that is trying to travel to Heaven. There is an animated film of the original Little Mermaid. I'm not sure why its even considered something to show children. The entire thing is dark and there's not even a single crab with a funny accent.

The movie faithfully ends with her dissolving into foam.

The Pied Piper, in other versions, sells the children into slavery.

In the original version, Cinderella's slippers weren't made from glass, but were fur slippers.

The "original" version of sleeping Beauty I read went like this:

SB does get awakened by a Prince, who does marry her. He won't bring her home to his castle, however and keeps the marriage secret and keeps SB hidden in the forest where he visits her occasionally. Things go on this way for about 4 years, during which time SB has two kids by the prince - Aurora and Day.

Meanwhile, the prince's father, the King has gone off to war. Word finally comes that the king has been killed and the prince is now the king, so he finally acknowledges his marriage and brings SB home to meet mom. SURPRISE! Mom's an ogre.

Prince goes off to war in his father's place, leaving SB and kids behind with Mommy Ogre, who of course desperately wants to eat them. Finally MO orders one of the servants to kills Day and cook him for her. The servant chickens out, hides Day in the woods and feeds MO a lamb. Soon, MO demands that a servant kill Aurora and cook her. Again, the kid is hidden in the woods and MO is fed a pig. Finally, MO wants to eat SB. She somehow figures out that she was previously tricked, so she rounds up SB and the two kids and has them tied up in the courtyard while she gets a pot of oil boiling so she can cook them herself.

Just at the critical moment, the prince (now king) returns home, sees what is about to transpire, and shoves MO into the pot of boiling oil where she dies.

And they all lived happily ever after. Except Mommy Ogre who died a horrible death.

The end.

The little red riding hood version I know, is that the wolf eats both grandma and riding hood, then a hunter comes along and finds the sleeping wolf, cuts the wolf open to save the grannie and hood, and then fills the wolf's stomach with stones. When the wolf wakes and is thirsty, he goes to a stream and falls in and drowns.

In Rapunzel, the witch scalps Rapunzel and throws her out of the tower, where she becomes a hermit. The witch lies in wait for the Prince with Rapunzel's hair and throw the Prince off the tower. The brambles at the bottom claw out his eyes, and he wanders the forest as a blind beggar. When Rapunzel finds him a year later, she weeps into his eye sockets and they magically grow back.
