Wade has to dress like this to help Logan fight a killer robot from space who is after Jean Grey. 

In the context of the story it fits it's purpose. The red robot in the background is a Shi'ar robot sent to kill Jean Grey. It's destroyed a town already and Logan had problems taking it out on his own. He found out Wade was close by and recruited him to fight the robot. The frontal assault proved useless until the robot said primary target Jean Grey no match. Which is when Logan gets the wonderful idea to do this. After the battle Logan, seeing Wade in this costume half torn to shreds has a moment and says "I think I'm finally over you Jeanie."
