The Making Of
Script
PAGE 5
Panel 1
Benoid makes his plea as best he can. We can see he hits an emotional note with Martia, who is still standoffish to his ideas.
BENOID SYC
We are your offspring. In a way we are all your children. Would you really do anything to endanger our lives?
Panel 2
Max, sensing the destruction his careless actions could cause, feels guilty and empathizes with his interlocutors.
MAX TEMPUS
I understand. Our efforts could kill you all. You killed the other Timenauts in self-defense.
MARTIA SVENSON
Well, we didn’t kill them...
Panel 3
Benoid is pushing the guilty but procrastinating Max hard here to give up his quest and return to his time.
BENOID SYC
We are begging you.
MAX TEMPUS
Say no more.
Panel 4
Max Tempus clicks a button on his breastplate (the one he has been reaching for every time he felt threatened on the previous pages.)
MAX TEMPUS
So long.
Panel 5
The portal collapses on itself as Max disappears in a mist of atoms.
Layout
Here's the layout Andrea came up with. My notes are at the bottom:While these layouts were excellent, I wanted some changes to be made for the final art:
Page 5, panel 4 - It probably would be better if we made Max right-handed - looks more natural and consistent with previous panels.
Page 5, panel 5 - I'd rather have Max shown being pulled into the vortex, disappearing in a ghostly mist due to dispersion of his atoms. Maybe with a gesture where he bids farewell.
Roughs
The rough gives us a great idea of where the art is going, allowing us to ensure that all characters are displaying the right emotions and are acting consistently with their journey. My only request here was for Page 5, panel 2, where the faces still lacked something. It needed to be as strong as the faces in the other panels.
Pencils
As usual, once we get the rough right, it is easy to move from pencil to final product:
Inks
Letters
This page required a bit more than just adding word balloons. It also had a sound effect for when the time traveler disappeared into the collapsing time portal:
If you are curious how a sound effect is lettered onto the page, I've made a video for you so you can follow along:
