The Making Of
Script by Lorenz Lammens
PAGE 5
Panel 1
As the doctor cuts the umbilical cord, the invisible man cuts it too with his small, futuristic knife.
TIME TRAVELLER (thought):
Allow me to do the honors, doc.
Panel 2
The thin nurse we met earlier in the lobby peeks her head through the door, addressing the new mother.
NURSE:
M'am, your husband said he is on his way to see you.
Catherine COCHRANE (agitated, confused):
My husband? He disappeared months ago.
Panel 3
The nurse talks to the agitated mother, befuddled. The Time Traveller is looking at her from the background, invisible to all but us.
NURSE:
Well… he just showed up… downstairs. He should have been here by now…
NURSE:
Perhaps he got lost?
TIME TRAVELLER (thought, saddened, yearning):
Oh, Catherine, I've missed you so much. I wish I could let you see me, but…
Panel 4
The woman talks angrily, lifting herself by the arms on her bed. The invisible man in the background hangs his head in deep disappointment.
Catherine:
Let him stay lost. He took off the night I served him the divorce papers.
Panel 5
The man now stands outside the door, completely visible to us again, his back pressed against the wall, looking through the barely open door as he closes it. His invisibility cloak has disappeared and his X-rayed hand glows weakly.
TIME TRAVELLER (thought):
Low on energy. It takes so much effort to pull objects from a dying future.
TIME TRAVELLER (thought):
Must leave.
Panel 6
He sees his son being wheeled out in an incubator from the room into the hallway by a nurse.
TIME TRAVELLER (thought):
He is so beautiful.
TIME TRAVELLER (thought):
I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you, son. But I am happy I could make it to your birth. Even it it was 20 years late.
Panel 7
The thin nurse from the lobby exits the room and, stopping startled in the door frame, looks directly at the time traveler. Both gaze at each other in surprise.
NURSE (exclamation):
You!
TIME TRAVELLER (taking a step back):
Err… Hi! Don't take this personally, but…
