Tips for Working With Your Letterer

Taylor Esposito, owner of the Lettering studio Ghost Glyph Studios tweeted some interesting tips about sending your files to your letterer.
  • Properly sized for print (usually 6.875 in by 10.4375 in; spreads 13.5 x 10.4375);
  • CMYK (unless B/W, then grayscale is acceptable, but never RGB),
  • flatten art.
  • Generally anything over 20 MB (single) or 30 MB (double) is too large.
  • You DPI should be either 300 or 400, but don’t exceed 400.
  • This will keep your letterer sane, as well as allow him or her to letter your pages quickly and efficiently.
  • Jim Campbell added: Also: NOT JPEGs, BMPs or PNGs! TIFF with LZW every time…
This info is from years of lettering and doing production/prepress on comics, and is only meant as a guide to help the process move smoothly.

Thanks to Zakk Saam for compiling all this info on his tumblr.

Go forth and make comics!
