Whoa. Turns out all the Oliver's are truly the unluckiest boys of their worlds, no matter how much they try to escape it! Bet Oliver 2 really regrets killing his parallel alter-ego and destroying the dimension hopper!
We are saying goodbye to Brandon Page, Robert Doan and Ross Hughes and welcome tomorrow's new team (Raffaele Ricciardi, Ylenia Di Napoli, Martin Silva and yours truly, Lorenz Lammens). But not before we see how our team made this page come to life!
The Making Of
Script
PAGE 9
Panel 1
Dark figures dressed in black cloaks materialise into the kitchen. The priests are hooded, their caps resembling that of medieval executioners. Their eyes glow ghostly. We get a sense that this world is a strange mix of futuristic technology guarded by the priests, contemporary technology for the citizens (mom and Oliver) but an ancient type of morality and religious system.
Oliver 2
Who are they?
MOM
Oliver, you know the high priests. They’ve come here to take you to the sacrifice.
Oliver 2
Sacrifice!?
Panel 2
Helicopter view of the town square and the house at the border of it. A giant, steel statue of Bah-lal sits in the middle, from its open mouth flames emerge. Oliver is lead by the high priest to the statue of Bah-lal.
MOM
Yes, Oliver. Are you ready for your sacrifice to Bah-lal, our creator and peace giver?
Your body will be consumed in its flames, until it is nothing but pure energy that can combat the shadowlanders in the netherworld.
What a glorious day!
Layouts
My script gave insufficient directions, and Brandon's layout was spot on, but didn't really allow for a clean way of having the mom relate the verdict to Oliver 2. This was however easy to solve. I suggested Brandon create 2 inset panels with both a tearful, but proud mom (sending of her boy on a glorious, religious adventure) and the panicked look on Oliver 2's face. Oliver 2, being the seasoned adventurer, would of course not show pure panic on his face, you would already see him calculating his odds and upcoming actions, but the second panel, filled with priests would make it clear that he has no recourse. Oh, yes, that boy is doomed indeed.
Roughs
Here you see Brandon adding the two reaction shots.
Pencils
With the rough line art approved, Brandon adds the details to the outlines he created.
Inks
Robert Doan now adds inks to produce refined outlines over the pencil lines.
Colors
The crisp inked page is sent to Ross Hughes, who adds color to the page.
Lettering
Yours truly adds the lettering to the comic, so that the imagery is supported by narrative context, et voilà , we have a finished comic book page.
I am sad to say goodbye to this team, we had a fun time working on this project. But it helped me discover the amazing talents of Ross Hughes. Remember, the Emerging project not only tries to find, develop and publish artists, which is what we are doing, it also tries to uncover what people working on the comics have the chops to create a book for major publishers. We also try to stay in contact with people that need a little bit more development to play in the big leagues and try to find them opportunities with smaller publishers, so that they can keep developing their skills.
